In brief

What you will learn

  • A buddy performs one active safety task.
  • Supervision continues through surface recovery.
  • Lifeguard presence does not replace a dedicated buddy.

A buddy is not just nearby

The buddy knows the planned attempt, remains positioned to observe, is not doing a separate drill and understands the agreed response if recovery is not normal.

Plan the attempt together

Agree on the task, maximum scope, signals and supervision position before starting.

  • One person performs while one person watches.
  • Stop if visibility or communication is uncertain.
  • Never practise static, dynamic or depth breath-holds alone.
