In brief

What you will learn

  • Equalize before discomfort.
  • Pain is a stop signal, not a target.
  • Persistent symptoms need appropriate medical review.

Early difficulty is useful information

If equalization becomes slow or asymmetric, stop descending and reduce pressure. Continuing harder can injure the ear.

Know the red flags

Pain, vertigo, hearing change or discharge are not normal training sensations.

  • Never descend through ear pain.
  • Do not use force to chase depth.
  • Tell the instructor about previous ear or sinus issues.
