In brief

What you will learn

  • Practise release in shallow controlled water.
  • The learner must be able to stop and surface reliably.
  • Never combine a tail with unsupervised breath-holds.

A tail changes basic movement

Joining the legs affects balance, stopping and reaching the wall. The first fitting should happen on land and then in shallow water.

Make the exit predictable

The learner needs one simple, rehearsed release sequence before swimming farther.

  • Inspect fabric and foot pockets.
  • Keep the wall and exit route clear.
  • Use direct one-task supervision.
