A practical checklist for supervision, entry, hygiene, communication and emergency awareness.
Know the environment before entering
Identify depth changes, permitted entry points, lane direction, the nearest stable exit and how staff signal an emergency. Follow facility instructions even when they differ from another pool you know.
Make supervision and communication explicit
Know who is supervising your task and how to stop it. Children and weak swimmers need close, attentive supervision; nobody should treat flotation aids as a replacement for attention.
- Do not run, dive or enter where the venue prohibits it.
- Never practise underwater breath-hold challenges alone.
- Stay out when illness conflicts with pool health guidance.
- Report damaged equipment, poor visibility or unsafe behaviour.
Respond early
Stop and tell staff about pain, breathing difficulty, dizziness, confusion or unusual distress. In an emergency, follow trained staff instructions and activate local emergency services. This checklist supports venue procedures; it does not replace them or personal medical advice.
