In brief

What you will learn

  • Exhale before the mouth clears the surface.
  • Rotate with the body instead of lifting the head.
  • Reset when timing becomes rushed.

Solve the exhale first

Holding air underwater forces the swimmer to exhale and inhale during one short turn. Practise a calm continuous exhale at the wall, then add a quick unforced inhale when the mouth clears the surface.

Keep balance during the breath

Let the head rotate with the shoulders and keep one goggle near the water. Return the face before the recovering arm passes.

  • Use short repeats with full control.
  • Avoid pressing down with the lead hand.
  • Pause if breathing causes panic or dizziness.
